The Fighting 69th - Calendar Print
General Meagher and The Irish Brigade, Fredericksburg, Virginia. December 2, 1862
Mort Kunstler says: "I painted The Fighting 69th because so many people asked for it. In 1991, I accepted a commission from the U.S. Army War College to paint Raise the Colors and Follow Me! It showed General Thomas Francis Meagher and the Irish Brigade charging the Sunken Road at Antietam. For this Irish Brigade picture, I selected a Fredericksburg scene.

In the Hands of Providence - Calendar Print
Chamberlain at Fredericksburg, Va., Dec. 13, 1862
Finally, it was their turn. For hours, Lieutenant Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain and the troops of the 20th Maine had awaited the command to enter combat at the Battle of Fredericksburg. The men from Maine watched with fascination and horror as wave after wave of their fellow soldiers courageously charged across a deadly, open field of fire and were dashed to pieces by Southern artillery and infantry fire. Now their time had come and their full initiation to combat would occur at one of the bloodiest battles of America's bloodiest war. I held my breath and set my teeth together," one of the regiment's officers would later recall, determined not to show fear if I could.
Faces fixed toward the enemy, they moved forward. Confederate artillery raked the regiment with deadly gusts yet on they went. They charged "over fences and through hedges, Chamberlain would recall, over bodies of dead men and living ones, past four lines that were lying on the ground. Like those who went before it, however, the 20th Maine was doomed to fail. After suffering an awful shredding, the regiment was forced back. Even so, on the plains of death at Fredericksburg, the men from Maine and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain forged a reputation for coolness and courage that would follow them to other famous fields of fire and glory.

Battle for the Shenandoah - Calendar Print
In 1864 Union and Confederate armies once again moved through the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. This final campaign in the valley required every soldier to attack or defend, as the life of the Confederacy was at stake. In move and countermove, the horsemen were the eyes and ears of the army. More often than not, mounted columns would find each other and the battle would begin over a river ford or road intersection. Cracking pistols and carbines would give way to snorting horses and flashing sabers as officers and men became hopelessly intermingled, each man "facing the maelstrom of steel. No order could be heard or obeyed as it was every man for himself..." As soon as it began, it would end, the participants riding away from the field and leaving only the dead and wounded.

Gods and Generals - Calendar Print
Antietam Campaign, Leesburg, Virginia, September 5, 1862
It was a meeting that could determine the outcome of the war.
After a brilliant victory at the battle of Second Manassas, General Robert E. Lee intended to lead his newly organized Army of Northern Virginia into enemy country. He would attempt to shift the focus of the war in the east from his beloved Virginia and take the fighting to the North. Along the way, he hoped to enlist crucial support from Southern sympathizers in Maryland and perhaps even provoke official recognition of the Confederacy by Great Britain. If he could win a major battle on northern soil - in Pennsylvania - it might even be enough to end the war's unprecedented bloodshed and gain independence for the South.

The Angle - Calendar Print
Gettysburg, July 3, 1863
During Pickett's Charge, the fighting at the stone wall along Cemetery Ridge turned to hand-to-hand combat. The Angle was a winding section of the wall where some of the most desperate fighting of the war occurred. It was here that a few hundred Tennesseans and Virginians penetrated the Federal line and here that they were immediately cut down or captured.

Morning Riders - Calendar Print
Gen. J. Buford, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1863, 5:15 a.m..
Mort Kunstler's comments:
"We see Buford riding his black horse followed by his headquarter's flag. Closer to the viewer, in the foreground is the bugler in the yellow striped jacket, followed by the rest of his staff coming out of the mist. We are looking at the west side of the Seminary. The windows, chimneys, and the facades have been changed but the building looked pretty much the way it looks today.
It was a fascinating picture for me to work on. I thoroughly enjoyed painting the architecture and the lighting effect and had the opportunity to portray, once again Gen. John Buford, the man who selected the terrain on which the battle was fought. It would ultimately decide the fate of not only the Battle but the outcome of the war".

We Still Love you General Lee - Calendar Print
The Surrender at Appomattox April 9, 1865.
Returning to his camp after meeting with U.S. Grant at Appomattox, Lee rides his beloved Traveller through the Southern lines. He wears a full dress uniform, sash, and ceremonial sword. He wanted to look his best for the encounter with Grant, which he had faced with characteristic dignity.
Although defeated, Lee had negotiated generous terms that paroled his men and allowed them to keep their horses. As he rides past them, the soldiers, many with tears in their eyes, cheer and press toward him, touching his leg or even his horse out of affection.
Pausing, Lee told his army, "Men, we have fought the war together, and I have done the best I could for you." He then doffed his hat, uttered a heartfelt good-bye, and returned to his tent. A tattered soldier turned in the ranks and shouted, "We still love you, General Lee!" Even now, more than a century later, the legacy of the man still evokes strong sentiments from those who study the war.

The Final Mission - Calendar Print
H.L. Hunley, Charleston, S.C. Feb. 17, 1864
Painting The Final Mission was an exhausting, but exhilarating experience for me. Thanks to the enormous amount of research assistance I received, I believe that the painting will stand the test of time. I hope that generations of Americans will be able to visit the restored Hunley, examine the submarine closely then study this painting and understand what that incredible last mission was really like. The Hunley -- and, hopefully, this painting -- deserve to be preserved as a cherished symbol of the innovative spirit, valor and sacrifice that was so common to Americans of the 19th century

Emancipation Proclamation - Calendar Print
In doing the research for this painting, I worked from the notes of Francis B. Carpenter who was given access to the White House and actually had Lincoln pose for him. The table, chairs, rug, and even the wallpaper are accurate. I naturally silhouetted Lincoln against the light of the window to have the viewer focus on the centre of interest: the president.

Soldier of Faith - Calendar Print
Gen. Robert E. Lee Orange, Va., Feb. 17, 1864. Those who personally knew General Robert E. Lee agreed that faith was the foundation of his life. In sunshine and in storm, in victory and in defeat," observed General John B. Gordon, his heart turned to God. A challenging childhood, the discipline of military life, the burden of command, the hardships of war all were tools of grace that shaped and reflected the faith and character of Robert E. Lee.

Gettysburg - Book
The Paintings of Mort Künstler
Text by James M. McPherson
In July 1863, the Confederate army had won a series of significant victories and the morale of the Union army was almost nonexistent. Confederate commander Robert E. Lee approached Gettysburg confident of a decisive victory on northern soil. After three bloody days, however, he had lost one-third of his army and was forced to retreat to Virginia. Gettysburg was the turning point of the Civil War.
Prepared as a companion to Ron Maxwell's epic film, Gettysburg, which was adapted from Michael Shaara's novel, The Killer Angels, this book combines the verbal skills of historian James M. McPherson with the unique artistic ability of Mort Künstler to tell the memorable story of the three days of Gettysburg and its aftermath.
This book was originally published in 1993 by Turner Publishing.

The Confederate Spirit - Book
Valor, Sacrifice, and Honor
The Paintings of Mort Kunstler
Text by Dr. James I. Robertson, Jr.
The Confederate States of America lasted less than five violent years, but its memory has survived for nearly 150. The Confederate Spirit is the story not of the Confederacy's chronology, but of its people - leaders and commoners - who became its legends. It is the story not of the Confederacy's ideology but of its determination and spirit.
The story of the Confederate Spirit is told through 88 spectacular works of art including 30 that have never been seen in any book. Mort Kunstler, America's premier historical artist, is "simply the best Civil War artist painting today." says Kaye Bayliss, former owner of Applegate Art in Winchester, Virginia. The superb text is by Pulitzer Prize nominee James I. Robertson, Jr.
